Encouraging Truths to Hold On To

There are seasons that we all walk through that can make us think….  WHAT!?!?!?!?!  This isn’t how it’s supposed to be…  what on earth is going on…  you know what I’m talking about, we’ve all had them.  Well that’s what’s been going on around here for a number of weeks.  To say that the crazy is off the charts…  well that would be an understatement.

But… GOD is HIS infinite wisdom – which astounds me hour by hour – knew what was headed my way… and somehow this little book – What Your Heart Needs for the Hard Days by Holley Gerth – dropped into my life when I needed my soul refreshed and my heart encouraged.  It truly has been a blessing.  I would encourage you to pick it up for yourself or for that person that may just be having a WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!   going on in their life. Making Sense of the Bible

Making Sense of the Bible: How to Connect with God Through His WordMaking Sense of the Bible: How to Connect with God Through His Word by David Whitehead

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“I want to read the Bible, but where do I start? The Bible can seem like an intimidating book, but it may be easier to understand than you think. Making Sense of the Bible will teach you how to enjoy studying it on your own.”

As the Author, David Whitehead, says right in the introduction – “The goal in reading the Bible is not to simply read the Bible. The goal in reading the Bible is to get to know and interact with the God of the Bible.” This is such a true statement.

I just finished reading this book and what an interesting book this turned out to be. It truly starts off by answering the simplest, yet so often asked question… why are there so many translations? Such an innocent question that I’ve heard asked many times. This book takes on that question and so many others.

By walking us through an overview of the various books of the bible – both Old and New Testament – we get a broad overview of the author, the message, the location, the culture, and the audience to whom the book was written.

The Bible is a big book, but it can be read and understood. This book would be an ideal addition to a Bible study for both a new or seasoned believer.

About the Author: David Whitehead has been helping people connect with Jesus Christ for more than 30 years throughout the U.S, and abroad. He is the pastor of Grace in Manhattan and a Church-planting coach for Redeemer City to City.

The Impressionist

I don’t often read fiction, but the title of this little book intrigued me.  Is it fiction?  It says so…  but it’s really so much more.

The ImpressionistThe Impressionist by Tim Clinton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Middle aged, disappointed and self-loathing, Adam Camp is anything but the picture of a successful man. With his wife threatening to leave him and their son addicted to drugs, Adam teeters on the verge of absolute despair – questioning his own existence and purpose for living.

After an explosive argument with his wife, Adam searches for an escape as he sets out on a journey that will dramatically recolor his world.” Continue reading

Are You Ready to Transform History

Are you ready to transform history?  This is the HUGE question that is posed by author, William L Ford III, in his book “Created for Influence“.

This is a powerful book that doesn’t pull any punches.  I knew from the first page of the first chapter that I was in for an interesting and challenging read.

“Abdicating our responsibility of preserving the customs, institutions and general moral conscience that prevent a society from decaying will leave the culture to rot all around us.  At times the Church stares in sickened fascination at what is decaying, longing for the Rapture, as God — and even creation– longs for our Savior to be manifest on the earth through us.”  Created for Influence page 17. Love. Period.

Love. Period.: Loving Those Who are Not Like YouLove. Period.: Loving Those Who are Not Like You by Rudy Rasmus

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“What would happen if we truly loved those who are different from us in race, background, abilities, gender, economic status, identity, or physical condition? How would our communities change if we stopped being afraid of those who don’t fit our definition of “loveable”? How would our hearts find greater joy if we acknowledged the risk of living without conditions – and did it anyways?”

Sincerely Yours

Sincerely YoursSincerely Yours by Jane Kirkpatrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Four unexpected letters. Four intrepid women. Four lives changed forever. Spanning a century and a continent, these romantic novellas will lead you on a journey through the landscape of love. Four young women find their lives altered after each receives a letter that set her on a new path From a Hudson River steamboat to a lush drawing room, from a carousel carver’s workshop to a remote hospital, you’ll be swept into the lives of women who are making their way in the world and finding love where they least expect it.”

Sincerely Yours is a collection of four novellas penned by four different authors – Jane Kirkpatrick, Amanda Cabot, Laurie Alice Eakes, and Ann Shorey.

Each of these four stories introduces us to four different women with one thing in common… each receives an unexpected letter. With each letter, lives are changed as these women set out on a path of discovery, redemption, mystery, romance and suspense. To say much more, will rob the reader of the twists and turns of each story.

I did enjoy these four stories. Each of them is under one hundred pages and yet, while that may seem too short… the skill of the authors in the character development and story telling brings the feeling and completeness of a novel twice it’s size. Very well done.

SuperGal vs. God

I’ve thought for years, that I should write my story….  the story of those 56 days that started in December 2005.  The story of my husband’s home-going.  As I read this book, I thought that I was reading my own story.  This author, Lori Hynson,  she get’s it.  She was so able to write not just my story – no matter how similar the circumstances – but the story of every SuperGal out there.  This book has left me thinking through alot of old lately.  Memories I should have put away a long time ago.  Thank you Lori. The Illusion of More

Read this and let your imagination run away with the beauty of the words….

“….. God’s display of talent is nothing short of supernatural. He put on the original magic show.
With a spoken thought the Creator turned an infinite void into an ever-expanding universe. Giving voice to His own imagination. He ignited the inferno of countless stars and sent worlds spinning into orbit. Like an inspired painter doodling on a three-dimensional canvas. He sketched out continents and colored in the oceans. Then, with mere words, God brought life — to Life!

“Grass, please.” And with the echo of His voice, a carpet of green covered the world. Continue reading

Breathe

The news is negative. The enemy is pulling out all the stops because his time is short. Christians need to take a deep breath and focus on the things of the Spirit. (CreationSwap/Paul Burger)

Look at your life. Life is hard. Look at the news. In our fallen, sinful world, evil swirls about like a violent dust devil, clouding the air of absolute truth and muddying the waters of pure grace that flow to eternal life through Christ Jesus. Continue reading
