More of the bathroom mirror

So…. Last month, in a post called “The Bathroom Mirror”, I made reference to the fact that we had received some disturbing news that an xray showed that Michael (a smoker) had the beginnings of emphysema.  I wanted to give an update to that post.

I posted that news on 7/2/13.  It was about 24 hours later that Michael chose the date of 7/7/13 as the day that he was going to quit smoking.  Now I would like you all to keep in mind that Michael is 56 years old and has been smoking since he was 12.  Do the math, that’s 44 years!  The longest that he has gone without smoking during all those years is approximately 4 days when he was in the hospital. So The Other Day I Bought A Book…

jesus calling book cover      Too funny….  while browsing around my blog, I noticed that I had another post called “I bought a book the other day”.    Dunno… just me I guess.

So the other day I bought a book.  It’s a devotional called “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young.  I had heard/read about this little devotional in another book I’m reading, so when I spotted it in the store, of course I bought it.  I had no idea how much this little book would bless my days.  Continue reading

The Bathroom Mirror

About a month ago, things at Mike’s work started getting really crazy.  There was talk of layoffs, people getting fired, etc .  It made things around here very tense and I don’t do well when there is tension in the house.  As Mike would leave each day for work, I would pray Lord just be with him today… keep him focused.  Late one night after a particularly stressfull shift at work… well…  I sort of lost my cool.

Now keep in mind that Mike is a wonderful God-fearing man.  But… the “old” mike shows up from time to time.  I didn’t know him then, but from what I hear I wouldn’t have liked him very much.  As asked him straight out if he believed in God, he said yes you know I do.  Do you believe in the Bible as the word of God… again, yes of course I do.  So then I started spouting out scripture about being anxious and that he needed to stand on that scripture and believe.  I could see that he was thinking about what I had said.

So then next day he heads off to work and I have a thought.

IMG_0685  I decided that I was going to put up the scripture on the bathroom mirror.  Well needless to say, he laughed at what he saw.  Then he stood there and read it over and over.  As you can see from the picture, there have been so many scriptures added to our bathroom mirror.  Continue reading

Be Anxious For Nothing

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6-7

Oh if it were only that easy…

I have these anxious thoughts.  They are stupid thoughts.  Yet, it seems that I have let them rule my life in the last year.  So I decided to do a little research about this stupid problem of mine on my favorite website: What Christians Want To Know…  www.WhatChristiansWantToKnow.com .  (If you’ve never visited it, I urge you to go there, those folks have blessed my heart more than once.

I found an article written by Derek Hill. What does the Bible say about anxiety, a biblical study.   http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/what-does-the-bible-say-about-anxiety-a-biblical-study/

It’s true.  Every one of us at some point in our lives has experienced anxiety.  In the last 7 years, I’ve had plenty.  Continue reading

Christian By Osmosis?

It was a funny (odd) night here last night.  Mike and I had decided to watch a video that had arrived from Jack Van Impe Ministries.  We rarely use the DVD player so trying to figure out how to make it work took some time.  We finally figured out that we had to push a certain button on the remote and voila’ … there it goes.

But prior to getting the DVD going, Mike was rummaging around inside the cabinet that holds the DVD player.  He was pulling out all sorts of old VHS tapes that had accumulated over the years.  Then he starts bringing out VHS box sets of “Jesus” teachings.  One after another after another.  I was quite pleased to see all of these, I had no idea that he had all of them.  Continue reading

January 1, 2013

My thoughts from today’s Bible Reading:

Gen 1:1 – 3:24 – The Creation Story

Gen 3:11 – 3:14  “And he said, “Who told you that you were naked?  Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?  The man said, “The woman YOU put here with me – SHE gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”  Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”  (emphasis mine)

That just struck a cord with me.  Even all the way back then, man makes a mistake, goes against the “rules” and he blames someone else. Not only did he blame “the woman”, but he also blamed God.  Like a whiny child… I can almost hear the whining… “It’s not my fault.  It’s your fault, YOU made her…YOU put her here with me, if YOU hadn’t put her here, I wouldn’t be in this mess.”

I haven’t lived on this earth for 56 years and not made mistakes.  Some huge whoppers for sure.  But one thing I’ve learned…  I made the mistake.  I reap the consequences.  I can’t blame my bad decisions on anyone but me.

Then I read this passage:

Gen 3:21 – The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
Even after they broke the one single rule that God had for them.  Even after the whining and crying and blaming,  He still loved them enough to take care of them.  To provide for them.  Isn’t that just the truth.  We sin…  we fall down… But the Lord our God still loves us.  He still cares for us.  He still provides for us.  That, to me, is Grace – undeserved, yet freely given.

The Last Few Hours of 2012

December 31, 2012 – 9:00 PM

Here it is, the last day of 2012.  So many people are thinking right now about what their New Year’s resolution is going to be.  I don’t make resolutions.  I’ve tried in the past, and it seems that within a few weeks those resolutions are just one more thing that I’ve failed at.  So, this year I have decided to set goals instead.  To me, goals are attainable.

So what are my goals?  Continue reading

Does God Speak?

People have asked me if God really speaks to people.  My answer to that is yes…  if we are quiet enough to hear Him, yes indeed He does.  A few years ago, God did indeed speak to me.  It was August 5, 2006. I woke up very early that morning, totally out of sorts.  I had spent the days before getting ready for a 1200 mile road trip to New England to say goodbye to my oldest and dearest friend.  Her husband had called to tell me that she didn’t have much longer.  My heart was so heavy.  I had know her since birth.  When I say that I knew her since the playpen… that’s what it was.  I had known her for 48 years, and now I was travelling to see her for what would be her last days here on this earth.  Cancer had invaded her body and was about to win this earthly battle.  She was soon to receive the Absolute Healing and go home to be with her Heavenly Father.

Revelations 19:11

“I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True.”   Rev 19:11

Are visions possible?  I will preface this story with a shorter story.  All the years growing up, I remember my mom being one of those people that would look up into the sky and she would say to me “what do you see?”  I would look up and say, “clouds.”  She, of course, was one of those blessedly amazing people that could pick out dogs and clowns and pogo sticks – okay maybe not pogo sticks, but nonetheless, she could see wonderful images in the clouds.  That is something that I could never master.   So what I am about to share with you is something that completely overwhelms my brain to this day.

I flew out of Knoxville Tennessee on a late June 2005 afternoon headed to New England.  I was seated on the right side of the plane near the window.  We were flying north, the sun was not coming in my window, as I was flying north, the sun was coming from the East.

The weather on the ground was much like it has been on most any summer day in the south, very overcast, humid and hazy.  The takeoff was uneventful even with the clouds.  But as you know, no matter how cloudy or stormy it is on the ground, you typically have clear blue skies once you clear the top of the clouds.  This trip was no different.         Continue reading
