Daily Reflections on the Names of God – A Review

Daily Reflections on the Names of God: A DevotionalDaily Reflections on the Names of God: A Devotional by Ava Pennington

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“What is your understand of who God is and how He works? Is it a biblical perspective, or have you been molding your understanding of God to fit your desires and expectations? If your perspective is not biblical, then it’s time to look at who God says He is and how God says He works.” (Daily Reflections On The Names Of God – Introduction – page 9)

Daily Reflections on the Names of God is a great devotional, that I have added to my quiet time. Unlike many devotionals, it is not dated and it has a great topical index to help you through whatever might be going on in your life.

In the introduction, there is a key for each devotion by a clever use of “arrows”. As we read a devotional, are we looking up, looking in or looking out to indicate where the devotion is focusing on? Each of the 366 days contains a bible reading, an explanation/study, a short prayer and thoughts to ponder for the day to learn who God is according to how He revealed Himself in His Word.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to dig deeper into God’s words and His promised for us.

The Harbinger & The Harbinger Decoded – Reviews

harbinger1The Harbinger Decoded by Jonathan Cahn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having read “The Harbinger” last year and loving it, I was excited to have the chance to review “The Harbinger Decoded” DVD. I will say that I was a bit disappointed during the first 5 – 7 minutes or so as it seemed that it was going to be a very long commercial for the Harbinger Book and there would be very little “decoding”. I was mistaken.

Rather quickly, the author, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, begins to unfold his story about the mystery’s of the Harbingers, or warnings, and how they relate to the United States of America starting in September 2001 – 9/11 to be exact.

He starts by showing us the ancient prophesy recorded Isaiah 9:10 and how it relates to Ancient Israel – specifically destruction of God’s chosen people and Israel and how that prophesy now relates to America. Through the series of the 9 Harbingers, we can clearly see how the ancient prophecies are signs that relate to the destruction and downfall of America. We are also given a glimpse of the impending judgments should America NOT choose to repent.

The information presented on the DVD is beautifully portrayed and narrated in a concise and logical way to lead the viewer through the revealing of the 9 Harbingers and beyond. The author does not just end the story and leave us wondering what can be done, if anything, to stop God’s judgment on America or is it too late. Rabbi Cahn invites the viewers to seek the truth in their own lives and recognize the wake up call that has been issued – that only a return to our Godly foundation on which this country was formed can save this nation. Examine Your Faith! A Book Review

Examine Your Faith!: Finding Truth in a World of LiesExamine Your Faith!: Finding Truth in a World of Lies by Pamela Christian

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“If your faith were put to a test – if you encountered a faith challenging crisis today –would your faith sustain you?

“Are you confident about what you belive and why you believe it?

“If you are not sure that your faith is based on a solid foundation, then by all means, you should examine your faith.”

In her book, “Examine Your Faith – Finding Truth In A World Of Lies”, Ms. Christian answers these questions in her own life by bringing together a careful and consise commentary of the leading world faith – Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, humanism (including New Age), Islam, and Christianity, adding personal testimonies of people who practiced them. She provides the reader with a definition of sound faith and explores how truth is determinded and looks at evil and how the various faiths deal with it, in comparision to Christianity. The book ends with a case for Christ, where she encourages the reader to conclude with her that the Christian faith provides the best possible explanation for our world, the existence of God, the reality of pain and suffereing and the conclusion of evil (pg 194).

As readers we are priviledged to walk with Ms. Christian on her journey to examine what she believed and why she believed it as she was forced to examine her beliefs in order to find peace and have any hope at all.

While this book is not a “lite” read, it is both enlightening and educational in regards to the definitions, truths and falsehoods, and discussions of the basic tenents of the other world faiths descibed in this book ending with the discussion on Christianity. The book concludes with a case for Christ and Christianity as the only true faith… with no competitors.

Verse Mapping

A few weeks back, while I was working on the Proverbs 31 Ministry – “When A Woman Says Yes To God” online bible study, we were given a reference to a blog that gave a teaching on Verse Mapping .  Verse Mapping is a unique way to learn scripture by meditating on the Word.  In this blog post, there was also reference to personalizing the scripture verses by crossing out words like “you”, “we”, “whoever”, “them” and write in your name.

This reminded me of something that my mom taught me many years ago.  It was shortly after I was married.  I was just a young bride and for whatever reason (I can’t even begin to remember the reason) I was being particularly snotty one day towards my new husband.

God-inspired I’m sure, but my mom just happened to show up at our home during the midst of my hissy-fit.  Of course, not to let her and dad know that we were argueing… we, or should I say I, dropped whatever it was about.  But my mom had a special gift of knowing when her children were being “stupid” (my word, never hers) Continue reading

Never Again

(note: I do not take credit for this list, I found it a few years back)

Pray these scriptures over yourself and anyone else you choose daily

Never again will I confess “I can’t” for “I can do all things thru Christ which strengthens me.” Phil 4: 13

Never again will I confess lack, for “My God shall supply all my need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:19

Never again will I confess fear, for “God has not given me the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim 1:7

Never again will I confess doubt and lack of faith, for “God has given to every man the measure of faith.” Rom 12:3  Continue reading

John 14:20

“On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you”  Jn 14:20

So, as you know I’ve been involved in an online bible study via the Proverbs 31 Ministry.  We are using the book, “What Happens When A Woman Says Yes To God” by Lysa TerKeurst  book cover.

As it happens, we have just ended week 4 of the study and the facilitators of the study posted a YouTube video that I find truly humbling.

Just go ahead and fast forward to start watching at approximately 5 mins 20 seconds.  I think you’ll enjoy it.

Galatians 5:22-23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,  goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control”

Lord help me to live by and walk in the fruits of Your Spirit.

Help me to LOVE those that perhaps I don’t always find loveable, and to those that I have been withholding my love.  Help me also to love myself when I don’t feel as though I deserve to be loved.

Let me feel the JOY of your presence around me at all times, not just when everything is going perfect.  But most especially when life happens.  When unhappy circumstances take over and grief and sorrow begin to invade my days.  Continue reading

Is it really okay to sometimes pray for ourself?

Is it really okay for me to pray for myself Lord?  Is that being selfish?  It seems that I think about and pray for everyone I know, but I never seem to ask for help for myself… except for the occasional “Lord Help Me Now” exclamation.

I don’t know that I’ve really ever sat down and said to God… okay God… here’s me… and here’s what I need your help fixing. ( I would hope I wouldn’t be that blase’)  I just feel like I get so wrapped up in everyone around me that I have such little time for me.  I come from a large family and an even larger “framily”… add to that the in-laws and their framily and yes… you’ve got lots of people around.  And with lots of people comes lots of crazy drama and lots of real issues.

And then there’s times that I get so wrapped up in “other thoughts”.  Human thoughts… worldly thoughts… just pure real people thoughts.  So how do I re-adjust my thinking?  How do I re-adjust my perspective?

I started re-reading a book today.  “A Woman After God’s Own Heart” by Elizabeth George. woman after gods heart book  In chapter 1, the author talks about this in the story or Mary and Martha.

Luke 10:41-42 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Hearing God’s Voice

book coverSo this week we are studying chapter 2 of this book.  The chapter title is : Hearing God’s Voice.

I think that we all want to be able to clearly distinguish God’s voice.  We want to hear it loud and clear so that there is no mistaking it or His message.  Oh if only it were that simple.

I can remember only one time in my life that I feel that I heard God’s voice loud and clear.  I can’t say what His voice sounded like, only that I heard words…  not an impression of words, but actual words.  It was during a time that I was so overwrought with life and my emotions were so out of control.  It’s as though God in His wisdom knew that He better say the words, because there is no way that I was going to hear Him.

But that got me to thinking about hearing from God.  Just a thought to ponder…..

The God that we hear today is the SAME God that walked and talked with Adam in the Garden!!!!  That image always blows me away.

Just a thought to ponder.
