My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“God still has a plan for you–not in spite of your past, but because of it! Do regret and shame over your failures, sins, and shortcomings make you wonder how you could ever be loved, much less used, by a holy God? Breathing Room: Letting Go So You Can Fully LiveBreathing Room: Letting Go So You Can Fully Live by Leeana Tankersley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“AN INVITATION TO BREATHE. Catastrophe or no catastrophe, if you are unhinged, disoriented, suffocating, or otherwise generally dragging, I’m inviting you to pull up a chair at this table . . .

Breathing Room is a beautiful release of self-condemnation, a discovery of the rest that comes when we offer ourselves some space to breathe. Vulnerable and winsome, Leeana Tankersley shows you how to stop beating yourself up, how to be radically on your own team, and how to truly experience grace. If you’ve been putting on a strong front and yet are secretly coming apart, you’ll find in these pages a trusted friend.”

Ultimate Health

I just finished reading this book – Ultimate Health – for the second time and have begun to really work through each chapter of this treasure.  I’ll admit it, I’m going to be 58 years old in a week or so, and I am NOT even close to being healthy – forget about Ultimate Health.

So when I read this book…  it really made me think.  I come from a line of folks that live long lives… but the way that I’m going, that’s not going to happen.  So…  in addition to what I write here, the books I review, the stories I share, etc.  I am launching a new blog in a day or so (the bare bones are there already).  This blog is about the next 365 days.  One year in the life of a middle age woman… my return to wholeness and health.

I plan to launch the blog in a day or so, I do hope that you’ll join me over there as well as your support here.  I do appreciate you all that have “liked” and “follow me”. Continue reading

Ignite God’s Vision for Your Life

Greater: Dream Bigger. Start Smaller. Ignite God's Vision for Your Life.Greater: Dream Bigger. Start Smaller. Ignite God’s Vision for Your Life. by Steven Furtick

Recently I became aware of a GodTube video of Pastor Furtick that I, as an evangelical Christian, find truly offensive.  For that reason,  I will not promote any products of Pastor Furtick and have removed my reviews of his books from my blog.

The Impressionist

I don’t often read fiction, but the title of this little book intrigued me.  Is it fiction?  It says so…  but it’s really so much more.

The ImpressionistThe Impressionist by Tim Clinton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Middle aged, disappointed and self-loathing, Adam Camp is anything but the picture of a successful man. With his wife threatening to leave him and their son addicted to drugs, Adam teeters on the verge of absolute despair – questioning his own existence and purpose for living.

After an explosive argument with his wife, Adam searches for an escape as he sets out on a journey that will dramatically recolor his world.” Continue reading

Hope Runs

Hope Runs: An American Tourist, a Kenyan Boy, a Journey of RedemptionHope Runs: An American Tourist, a Kenyan Boy, a Journey of Redemption by Claire Díaz-Ortiz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“She went to Kenya to climb a mountain. But God has other plans. When Claire-Diaz-Ortiz arrived in Kenya at the end of an around-the-world journey, she decided to stay the night, climb Mount Kenya, and then head back home. She entered an orphanage, seeing it as little more than a free place to spend the night before her mountain trek. Hope Runs is the emotional story of one American tourist, one Kenyan orphan, and how one day became one year that would change the course of both their lives forever.” Continue reading

The Princess Within

The Princess Within for Teens: Discovering Your Royal InheritanceThe Princess Within for Teens: Discovering Your Royal Inheritance by Serita Ann Jakes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“It’s time to get ready for the ball. Girls of all age want to feel like Cinderella at the ball. But, maybe o feel more like Cinderella before the ball – overlooked, inadequate, hurting, maybe even used and abused. Sometimes it’s heard to fell beautiful, in God’s eyes or your own, when something or someone has robbed you of your inner beauty.”

From time to time, I will pick up a book that isn’t totally relevant to my life or me at the time. Such was my thoughts on this book – The Princess Within for Teens – Discovering Your Royal Inheritance… for full disclosure – note that I am a 50+-year-old woman.

However, I did enjoy reading this book. Yes some things are different than when I was a teen – social media, etc. That being said, the message of this book is relevant. I do remember feelings of rejection, being hypercritical of myself, knowing that I was made for more, but not knowing how to get there.

So, in truth, perhaps a few peripheral things have changed, but the thought process of the Princess within each of us really hasn’t.

The Storm Inside – Trade the Chaos of How You Feel for the Truth of Who You Are by Shelia Walsh

“Women feel the storm activity all around. We find ourselves teetering somewhere between everyday chaos and crisis. We can feel a storm brewing, we are in the middle of a storm, or we are facing the aftermath of a storm. But don’t be afraid because it is possible to grow through turbulent times. Storms show you what’s really going on inside, reveal what you really believe, and actually make you stronger.“

The Storm Inside is a powerful book written for we women that somehow seem to spend a good portion of our lives either about to be run over by a storm, are in the middle of a storm, or have just come through the other side of a storm a bit battered and bruised. Those storms of our lives sap our strength and resolve and leave us precious little resources for the next. In this book, the author – Sheila Walsh – shows us that while we may not be able to avoid the storms, we can triumph in and through the storms. Continue reading
