God, Are You Real?

Can God do this? Can God fix this? Can God move mountains? Can God do the seemingly impossible when all around you say that it is impossible?

 The answer is YES!

Recently someone I know reached out to friends and family asking for “divine intervention and good intentions” in a very private matter. I messaged that I would keep them and the family in my prayers. The reply from my friend was “no divine intervention will help”. This hurt my heart as I know that somewhere deep inside, this person knows the truth. Yet somehow over the years a conscious choice to deny the truth of God’s realness, goodness and grace was made.

Some may think that life altering crises happen only to people that have made the conscious choice to ignore or reject God. Oh if that were only true. Time and time again, we see historical evidence recorded throughout the Word of God of the days, weeks, months, years even generations of chaos, calamity and turmoil that erupted in and around the lives of God’s children – divorce, death, adultery, sickness, prison, torture, disgrace, scandal, ridicule, demons, treachery and betrayal – to name a few. In each of these instances, God shows us that there are times the road to the miraculous travels through the ugly, wicked and evil – and it does so because of FAITH –  faith that is sure and certain and confident.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.” Hebrews 11:1-2 NIV

It is easy to go through life’s disappointments, failures, fears and uncertainties and lose whatever faith in God you might have. Once you begin to question His reason for the pain and turmoil in your life, you can very easily come to the conclusion that God’s really doesn’t care about you or your crises. And if He doesn’t care about you, then He is not a loving God and if He isn’t a loving God, then why would you spend your time believing in some fairy tale. Sound about right?

Consider this… maybe there is in fact an Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Loving, Tender, Gracious, Righteous, Eternal, Holy, Incomprehensible, Infinite, Sovereign God of this Universe, and He is your creator and the sustainer of all things in Heaven and on Earth.

Or perhaps it’s easier to claim there is no God because to acknowledge Him is to admit the truth that you’ve known all along. When you acknowledge that there is a God and He exists, you must then acknowledge the truth as well – that you are sinner, and that you are doing this life by your own rules, and not by His. It is not in your realm of possibility to even begin wonder what life would be like in His service. Nope, way better to life this life as a free-spirit traveler without rules or consequences.

Your mantra has proudly said best by Hunter S. Thompson “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” Sound about right?

Really? How’s that working out so far? How’s the peace in your heart and mind? How’s your ability to deal with all of the unknowns that come with life in general? Answer these questions honestly and truthfully in the quiet of your heart. As a child, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother… have you never sat at the edge of a sick child’s bed and asked God to heal that child… to break that fever? Have you never asked God to help you when your life has fallen off the rails and you can’t see your way to the top? Have you not stood at an open casket of one taken much too young and asked Him why? Do you stare at the nightly news and ask yourself, where are you God? If you don’t believe, then why are you asking for Him to intervene? If you don’t believe, then why ask Him for help, guidance and answers? If He doesn’t exist, then He cannot save your sick child, He cannot rescue your failing marriage, He cannot put your life right-side up. He cannot fix your world.

Justice and equity are very important to Him. But so are grace and mercy. While God will hold each of us answerable for our own lives, in His mercy He extends His grace to the repentant sinner. God promises of us that, “’If the wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed and observes all My statutes and practices justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die. All his transgressions which he has committed will not be remembered against him; because of his righteousness which he has practiced, he will live. Do I have any pleasure in the death of the wicked,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘rather than that he should turn from his ways and live?’ I have no pleasure in the death of anyone who dies,’ declares the Lord GOD. ‘Therefore, repent and live.‘” Ezekiel 18:21-23 NKJV

These words from the Billy Graham Evangelical Association website speak loud and clear on the topic of believing in God…  “But the real reason most deny God’s existence can be summarized in one word: pride. They want to run their own lives, and they don’t want anyone—especially God—to interfere with the way they’re living. They want to be in control of everything they do, and they know that if they were to believe in God, they’d have to change their lifestyle. Instead of living by their own list of what’s right and wrong, they’d have to take seriously God’s moral standards.

“To live without God, however, is to live without hope—hope for His presence with us right now, and hope for eternity. Instead of knowing that God has put us here for a purpose, they end up living without any ultimate meaning in life. No wonder the Psalmist declared, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God’ ” (Psalm 14:1).”

If we are to find the miraculous in the swirling vortex of the vile, then it might just be that we must be humbled enough to kneel down in the ugliness, to admit our powerlessness to solve the situation through our own labors and seek God. To seek His answer to the chaos, seek Him in all His grace.

But that’s not what is happening. We would rather blame God and say, “See, that’s why I don’t love you, you let this happen to me”. No, God didn’t let it happen.  Life happened.  Yes, bad things happen. To think that God’s children are exempt from life altering crisis is just wrong thinking. If that was the case, then explain my life journey of widowhood, cancer, defeat, and abuse, business failing, childlessness, family murder victim and near financial ruin. Sorry, that has nothing to do with God… it’s just life.

So, for the ones that blame God for their life… that sit defeated, or pace around on the sidelines wringing their hands asking why me, all the while beseeching others to kneel, or offer empty platitudes, or good wishes, or positive thoughts, and good vibes instead… maybe instead of throwing up our hands in surrender, we need to roll up our proverbial sleeve and get our hands dirty and seek the Answerer.

The TRUTH is not every miracle is apparent; not every miracle comes wrapped up in a pretty bow against a backdrop of rainbows. Not every answer is what we want. Not every resolution makes sense.

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there anything too difficult for Me?” Jeremiah 32:27

God, in His infinite love and mercy, has made a way for those who want to “get right” with Him… to repent for their sin-filled life. He sent a “Messiah” named Jesus Christ as our Savior, a Servant who willingly suffered and died a vicious, ugly death in our place in order to pay for the sins of anyone who would turn from their evil ways and trust in Him.

So the question becomes – does He exist and you choose to renounce Him? Or is He some made up fairy tale that has never existed? Or does He exist and you’re over doing this life as you have been?

The ultimate decision is yours and yours alone. No human can make the decision for you, you make it, and you own it. I will just say this, if you choose to renounce or reject Him, know that you will live eternity in separation from Him. One zepto-second after your last breath, your final heartbeat on this earth is too late to change your mind. The answer that you make must be sure and unwavering.

Just make sure that you make this decision in light of all the evidence and understand the full and true impact of your decision.

But He said, “The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”…” Luke 18:27

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations,  I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 NIV

Maybe you have felt His nudging calling you to Him; maybe you know you’ve felt His presence in and through your life. You know that you’ve been living a lie, maybe it is time to lean in to Him, to let go and confess that you need Him?
