For thousands of years, believers have struggled to solve a seemingly unanswerable question: How can an all loving, all powerful God permit suffering? For attorney and former US Army office Kevin Tewes hit home while he was at a military hospital in Baghdad, watching physicians treat an Iraqi toddler riddled with shrapnel wounds.

The title to this book, Why God Allows Us To Suffer – Answering Christianity’s Most Difficult Question” is what piqued my interest and my desire to read this book. Haven’t we all wondered why a loving God would allow evil and suffering to exist in this world?

This is a huge question has been raised, and has been attempted to be answered, by some of the most brilliant Biblical Scholars and laymen for centuries. Even the author points out on page 4 of this book, “The theological conundrum that is raised by these questions is on that has baffled theist for thousands of years”. Yet, no one has been able to definitively answer the question… as, in my opinion only, no one knows the mind of God – at least not on this side of Heaven.

So you can understand my dismay when I finished reading the last paragraph of the Introduction: “In the pages that follow I present an entirely new and comprehensive solution to the most confounding enigma of the Christian faith. This solution, moreover, does what no other proposed explanation to the problem of pain has ever done – it takes an honest account of the mind boggling scale, arbitrariness and brutality of suffering that occurs in this world while remaining wholly consistent with the Bible. Put simply, what follows is the definitive solution to the problem of pain and evil.” (emphasis mine).

The author continues on over the next 112 pages, the author goes on to “Redefining a Ancient Problem” in part one and a discussion of the “Creation and Fall” in part two, along with his conclusion to the answer to the question of Why God Allows Us To Suffer at the end of the book.

I wish I could say that this book helped to give me the answers I was looking for, sadly I could not get past the unabashed hubris of the author. My thoughts were tainted 34 pages into the book. Please don’t take my thoughts as gospel. I would urge you to read the book for yourself.
