Love. Period.: Loving Those Who are Not Like YouLove. Period.: Loving Those Who are Not Like You by Rudy Rasmus

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“What would happen if we truly loved those who are different from us in race, background, abilities, gender, economic status, identity, or physical condition? How would our communities change if we stopped being afraid of those who don’t fit our definition of “loveable”? How would our hearts find greater joy if we acknowledged the risk of living without conditions – and did it anyways?”

Sincerely Yours

Sincerely YoursSincerely Yours by Jane Kirkpatrick

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Four unexpected letters. Four intrepid women. Four lives changed forever. Spanning a century and a continent, these romantic novellas will lead you on a journey through the landscape of love. Four young women find their lives altered after each receives a letter that set her on a new path From a Hudson River steamboat to a lush drawing room, from a carousel carver’s workshop to a remote hospital, you’ll be swept into the lives of women who are making their way in the world and finding love where they least expect it.”

Sincerely Yours is a collection of four novellas penned by four different authors – Jane Kirkpatrick, Amanda Cabot, Laurie Alice Eakes, and Ann Shorey.

Each of these four stories introduces us to four different women with one thing in common… each receives an unexpected letter. With each letter, lives are changed as these women set out on a path of discovery, redemption, mystery, romance and suspense. To say much more, will rob the reader of the twists and turns of each story.

I did enjoy these four stories. Each of them is under one hundred pages and yet, while that may seem too short… the skill of the authors in the character development and story telling brings the feeling and completeness of a novel twice it’s size. Very well done.

Arms Open Wide

I know that I say it over and over again… so forgive me when I say it again…  but I have just finished reading the most amazing book.

It is a 35 page devotional.  But oh it is so much more than that.  This book captivated me.  The author, Sherri Gragg, is a master storyteller.  Her ability to take a story from scripture and bring it to life many times left me without words.

With a subtitle of: A Call To Linger In The Savior’s Presence….  that is truly what you will want to do… just linger in His presence. Continue reading

Deliver Us From Evil

I just finished a book called: “Deliver Us From Evil: A Pastor’s Reluctant Encounters with the Powers of Darkness” by Don Basham.

This was a very interesting book.  I had not heard of Pastor Basham prior to this.  I used to think,  like the Pastor originally thought, that evil cannot invade and reside within a Christian… as Light and dark… Good and evil cannot coexist in the same place.  I don’t know why I thought that, I guess it’s just what I’ve been taught along the way.  I do/did however believe that Christian can be influenced by evil.  That satan and his minions can, and do, influence our thoughts and behaviors.  Continue reading

25 Ways to Communicate Respect to Your Husband

So… I got this book a couple of weeks ago.  The title sounded interesting enough.  But it wasn’t until the book arrived that I thought that I might have made a mistake agreeing to read this book.   The last thing that I want to do is to insult the author with my opinion of her work.

I have to say that I am so glad that I did request to read this book.  I wasn’t expecting it, but i was inspired by it.

I finished reading this book today – Mother’s Day.  I’ve been thinking a lot about my mom today – oh how I miss her.  More so recently.  I think that perhaps this little 170 page book had something to do with it.  My mother had this habit (one I found truly annoying when I was a young bride) of “peace at all cost”.  She used to make me crazy with what I thought at the time were her “old-fashioned” ideas about what makes for a happy husband and happy home and therefore a happy wife.  I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older that her ideas were not so old-fashioned… nope they were remarkably on point.  Continue reading

Lost and Found

Lost & Found – Finding HOPE in the Detours of Life by Sarah Jakes

What a remarkable story!!!  I was captivated by this book from the first page… and by the end, I was in awe of the wisdom of this young woman.

While I have not experienced any of the circumstances that Ms. Jakes has, I somehow found myself in this story.  Perhaps because I too thought that God had so given up on me…  that He was just soooo tired of giving me just one more chance to “get it right”.  In this book, I found the words to my own song: Continue reading

God, Grace and Gumption

It wasn’t my plan, but I spent the entire day yesterday reading a most amazing book – Miss Brenda and the Loveladies by Brenda Spahn and Irene Zutell.

As the subtitle reads…  “One woman’s brush with prison… A community of women fighting the odds for survival on the outside…”

Some years back in another life, I had a family member end up in prison after being convicted of murdering her sister.  She ended up in prison at the young age of 18.  Scroll forward 15+ years…  unable to cope with the free world, with no skills and no one to give a second chance to a murderer…  and then wondering why she ended up back in prison??  Continue reading
