“…we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, Who is the head of His body, the church”
Ephesians 4:15 NLT
“That I may walk in Your truth” Ps 86:1
What is truth? Well a Google search on “what is truth” returned 683,000,000 hits – so someone, or quite a few someone’s, out there knows what truth is. Or at least they are offering a definition of what truth might be. But are they offering us their truth? Is their truth true? Or is it my truth? Is my truth true? Just who’s truth is it and who and what makes it true? Now that’s a whole bunch of questions!
Since 683,000,000 Google hits would be a bit more time consuming that I am ready for… I will start at the beginning. What is truth?
How do we define truth? It’s simple to say that truth is something that is true. But does that really say what truth is?
Dictionary.com says the following:
- The true or actual state of a matter: He tried to find out the
- Conformity with fact or reality; verity: The truth of a
- A verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like: Mathematical
- The state or character of being true.
- Actuality or actual existence.
- An obvious or accepted fact; truism; platitude.
- Honesty; integrity; truthfulness.
I’m still not sure that that is the definition that does it for me. Scroll down the page a bit and there is this:
Truth in the Bible
Used in various senses in Scripture.
- In Proverbs 12:17,19, it denotes that which is opposed to
- In Isaiah 59:14,15, Jeremiah 7:28, it means fidelity
- The doctrine of Christ is called “the truth of the gospel” (Gal.2:5), “the truth”(23:7;4:4). Our Lord says of himself,” I am the way and the truth” (John14:6).
Easton’s 1897 Bible Dictionary[I]
Just how many types of Truth are there? Lots! I typed “Types of Truths” into Google. That only returned 293,000,000 hits. Better I guess.
What comes back is way too much. There is personal truth, mathematical truth, social truth, absolute truth, naked truth, unvarnished truth, home truth, gospel truth, and a moment of truth. There are also mis-truths, non-truths and truthlessness. It’s all too much and it makes my head hurt!
What is truth? To me Truth isn’t all that complicated or is it. I can give you the simple answer that the truth is I am a sinner and by the truths found in the Gospel I found forgiveness and healing.
Perhaps you’re thinking to yourself that that answer sounds just too simple. Well it is… it is just that simple. There are plain truths set forth for us in the Word.
In John 17:17 we are told “Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth.”
Ephesians 1:13-14 says “In Him you also, when you heard the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in Him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of His glory.”
The Bible is full of truth
Psalm 119:160 “The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous rules endures forever.”
Psalm 25:5 “Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all the day long.”
Psalm 43:3 “Send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling!”
Psalm 86:11 “Teach me Your way, O LORD, that I may walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name.”
James 1:18 “Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures.”
John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:17 “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
John 17:8 “For I have given them the words that You gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from You; and they have believed that You sent me.”
Ephesians 4:25 “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”
1 John 1:8 “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 3:18 “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
Perhaps we don’t always want to hear the truth. Perhaps sometimes we want to skip along not acknowledging the truth, but its right there, we really cannot escape it. What I know is that there is such freedom in the Truth!
“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32
So why this big discussion on Truth? I believe that there is so much in this world today that is not truth… at least not the Truth of the Bible. Not the truth found in the Word. I believe that what is being taught as Truth, is a little bit blurry… out of focus as it were. So, I’d like to talk about it… write about it… discuss it. I am not looking to get into a political battle over anything here.
What I write about is my opinion. It is taken from my own thoughts, with examples from my own life. I am not a theologian. I’m just a simple woman trying to make sense of this sometimes upside down world we live in. However, I believe that in some things there is no blurry line. There is no gray area. I believe there are truths… and we need to know the truth. And once we know the truth, we can’t be afraid to speak the truth.
I believe there is a long overdue discussion about the slippery slope that is Truth in this world. Do I know it all? Nope. But it’s my hope that we, as Children of the Most High King, can bring the truth into our own little area of the world that keeps moving the line as to where truth really lives. It’s time to “unblur” the lines of what is truth – as we find in the Word – and what isn’t the truth.
This story is the primer to an upcoming series called Tuesday Truths. It is my hope that in the next few months, we will walk together in the Truth by joining in on the discussion, offering thoughts and ponderings, sharing what’s on your heart.
All I ask is that we remember to be gracious, patient, understanding, and above all respectful of anyone who has thoughts differ from yours. If you would like to have Tuesday Thoughts delivered to your inbox, please send an email to:

I look forward to hearing from you.
